BEND IT, SHAPE IT

Plasticine (the non-toxic modelling clay) can be used for a variety of things in a workshop. Here are some of my favourites: use it to make a small pool when drilling materials that require a lubricant; mould replacement parts; mould silicone stoppers and washers such as the ones under your toilet seat; fill pinholes in a plaster-of-Paris mould (taken form Popular Mechanics, submitted by Sean, Lakeside)

BICARBONATE OF SODA

Is an excellent all-round cleaning agent, without the nasty chemicals found in many formulas used today. Add a spoonful to washing-up water to help remove grease. Add to the dishwasher to reduce odour. Wash worktops down and clean sinks and fridges with bicarb in hot water. Detox your oven with a paste of bicarb and a little water. Spread on and leave overnight. Use the paste to clean the bathroom, too, instead of cream cleaner. Pour bicarb, followed by vinegar down plug holes to minimize smells and keep unblocked. Dry-clean sofas and carpets by sprinkling on bicarb. Leave for 15 minutes to absorb any stale odours, then vacuum. Use to clean walls, floors, grouting, windows and mirrors. Sprinkle in trainers to reduce odour, use as a stain remover, add to laundry in the washing machine to soften the water – use less detergent!
